What is the origin of the Special Olympics Oath?
The Special Olympics Oath dates back to ancient Rome and has a fascinating history. In 1968, Eunice Kennedy Shriver asked the Kennedy Foundation Advisor, Dr. Herb Kramer, to draft an oath for Special Olympics athletes to encourage them to victory, but not consider it a defeat if they did not win. Dr. Kramer suggested the Oath, originally used by Roman gladiators prior to their competition in the Coliseum, and this oath is universally used today.
