What is the origin of the meat pie?
The Australian meat pie is an Aussie icon. The tradition of pie making and eating came to Australian shores with the early European settlers beginning in 1788. Pastry cooks in Europe had been encasing fruit and meats in pies since the 13th century, but Australia made the delicacy its own. Through the years Australians handed down the tradition of pie making and eating and during World War II pies were recognized as the “national dish.” Throughout the Aussie meat pie’s history the cuisine has grown in popularity and can now be purchased just about anywhere in Australia.
