It comes from the Scandinavian ‘ulf’, meaning wolf, which became ‘wulf’, in old high German. The French word for wolf is ‘loup’ or ‘loupe’, frum the Latin ‘lupus’, and so bears no relation at all. Wolfe is an Anglo-Saxon word for wolf, from the aforementioned old high German.
