The English Shepherd was thought to have been brought to England when Caesar and the Roman Legions invaded in 55 B.C. They were used to herd the invaders’ livestock. Left along the way when there was no need for them, they bred with local dogs and produced the English Shepherd. The English then brought the dog with them when settling in America. It is now considered an American breed. When The Border Collie became popular in the 1950s, interest in the English Shepherd waned and it has become a rarer breed.
