What is the origin of the Bluetick Coonhound?
An American dog originating in Tennessee, Coonhounds are probably descended from English Foxhounds and French hounds. Blueticks are known as “cold-nosed’ trackers as they sniff out trails that are older and colder. General Lafayette presented George Washington with 5 of the French hounds. What does the Bluetick Coonhound look like? Females are 21-25 inches tall and weigh45-65 lbs. Males are 22-27 inches tall and weigh 55-80 lbs. The broad head has a long muzzle ending in a large, black nose. Ears are long, pendant and set low. Eyes are large, wide-set and round, dark brown in color. The tail is moderately long and tapering. The single-layer coat is thick, medium coarse and smooth. Colors are blue with dark blue to black mottling. Sometimes there are tan spots over the eyes and cheeks and/or red ticking on the lower legs and chest. Head and ears are mainly black. The coat requires brushing every other week.
