What is the origin of the American Pledge of Allegiance?
World Almanac gives the origin of the pledge as follows: The original pledge was first published in the Sept. 8th 1892 issue of Youth’s Companion, a weekly magazine then published in Boston. Authorship of the pledge has been disputed but in 1957 a Library of Congress report attributed the authorship to Francis Bellamy, one of the editorial staff at the magazine.
