What is the organizational structure of the Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement?
The International Red Cross Movement is made up of The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (Federation) and 185 National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. The ICRC and the Federation have been described as the two heads of the Movement while the national societies can be seen as the many arms. The Canadian Red Cross is a national society and operates out of one national office (located in Ottawa) and four zone offices. Zones are divided geographically: Atlantic Canada, Quebec, Ontario and Western Canada. Within each zone there are regions and branches370 branches across Canada. The Canadian Red Cross’ structure is made up of Governance and Management. On the governance side, our Board of Governors (made up entirely of volunteers and headed by the Societys President) establishes national policy, delegates refinement and further development and monitors performance.
