What is the Nuclear Regulatory Commission?
The NRC is a five-member commission with a mission to regulate the civilian use of nuclear materials and to ensure the protection of public health and safety. The NRC members are appointed to five-year terms by the president, and they are confirmed by the Senate. The president designates one member to serve as the chair. As of June 2009, the chairman is Gregory Jaczko. Other commissioners are Dale Klein and Kristine Svinicki. Two spots are vacant.
