What is the novel Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen about?
It’s a take on the Gothic style novels that were in fashion at the time. Catherine Morland, a 17-year-old “heroine, from a large family goes to Bath with friends. Whilst their she makes friends with Isabella Thorpe and her brother John, who both know Catherine’s brother James. At a ball she meets Henry Tilney, the second son of a rich General who owns a large house called Northanger Abbey. Catherine becomes friends with Henry and his sister Eleanor as she realises that Isabella and John are not as nice as she first thought, despite Isabella becoming engaged to James. When the Tilney’s decide to leave Bath, Catherine is invited to join them at the Abbey. When she hears about the circumstances of their mother’s death from Henry and Eleanor, Catherine becomes convinced that General Tilney murdered her and snoops around for evidence. Henry catches her and realises what she thought and is horrified with her. She realises how stupid she has been. She receives letters from James and Isabella
