What is the normal procedure followed by the Police Department on finding an unidentified dead body?
(a) On finding an unidentified dead body, the Investigating Police Officer follows the procedure laid down in section 174 CrPC. He proceed to the place of occurrence, holds an inquest in presence of two or more witnesses and draws up a report of the apparent cause of death describing the wounds stating by what weapons such marks appeared to have been inflicted. The inquest report is forwarded to the District Magistrate or Sub-Divisional Magistrate. A.U.D. Case is registered in the Police station concerned and the body is sent for post mortem examination to ascertain the actual cause of death. Efforts are made by way of local enquiry to identify the deceased and contact/inform the relatives. If the body remains un-identified and unclaimed it is disposed of as per the procedure depending upon the circumstances.
