What is the noise my 2002 Jeep liberty makes when braking/decelerating?

The noise started a couple of weeks ago. It is deep, loud noise with a little vibration from under the center of the car (we feel it on our bums.) It only happens when we are decelerating (foot off gas) or braking at over 30 mpr. We took it to a mechanic twice. First time, the sound was minimal and he said it could be the CV boot. It was not that. Second time, the sound was loud. The mechanic said it is probably the bearing in the back passenger side but he can’t fix it. Can we drive the car while looking a mechanic to fix it and if so, for how long before it becomes dangerous? HELP! A: Cilia, is your jeep a front wheel drive? If so it would have CV joints and boots. If it isn’t, it won’t have CV joints and boots. Never the less, the noise doesn’t appear until you hit the brakes and that actually sounds like a universal joint. But that is only if you have a rear wheel drive jeep. Of course on a front wheel drive the CVC joints do the same thing as the universal joint do on the rear whe
