What is the Nitrogen Cycle refered to?
The Nitrogen Cycle is when the beneficial bacteria breaks down the organic nutrients in the pond water into ammonia and then into nitrites and further into nitrates. Fish wastes also produce ammonia which require to be converted into nitrites and nitrates or else the ammonia can kill them. The cycle of converting ammonia into nitrites (by nitrosomonas bacteria) and then into nitrates (by a different type of bacteria; nitrobacter) is refered to as the Nitrogen Cycle and naturally occurs in all ponds and lakes.
