This aim of the Nitrates Directive (directive 91/676/EEC) is to reduce and prevent water pollution caused by nitrates from agricultural sources. The directive obliges member states to monitor the nitrate concentration and trophic status of bodies of water. Member states must identify the bodies of water with a eutrophic level above 50 mg/l or those that might reach this eutrophic level if no action is taken.
