What is the NIE?
It is the Foreigners Identification Number, which is a unique and exclusive personal identity number issued by the State Police Department and assigned to foreigners. This number should appear in all the official documents that are issued or processed for the foreign citizen in Spain, as well as in all the application forms presented to Government Authorities, and in the majority of transactions with private entities (banks, insurance companies…). The NIE is not an identity document, which means that the European citizen should carry other corresponding documentation as well as the NIE (passport, national ID card…).
