What is the nickname of the Korean war and why?

A common name is “the forgotten war,” while scholar Bruce Cumings suggests a better name is “the unknown war.”  This refers to an American point of view, of course.  The war is hardly forgotten or unknown in Korea.

Because President Truman, nor anyone else knew what to call a war in which ALL WEAPONS could “not be used” to win it, such as the existing atomic bomb; for the lack of a better word, Truman chose Police Action. The words “LIMITED WAR” were also used; which was more correct…as the Korean War was America’s first limited war (limited to the use of NON-Nuclear Weapons). A police action is actually what is occurring in Iraq; an action against insurgents and terrorists to restore law, order and stability to the nation of Iraq. But again, President Truman and all others at the time, never experienced atomic warfare, limited war, nor even communists. All they knew was “Declared” and “Total Wars”, such as World War’s One and Two. Both of which President Truman experienced; once as a Captain of artillery in WW1, and once as Vice President of the US under President F. D. Roosevelt.
