What is the newest treatment of ostoporosis?
Fosamax is a new drug that reduces the risk of spinal fractures in post-menopausal women by nearly 50 percent. Fosemax works by reducing the activity of the cells that cause bone loss and by decreasing the faster rate of bone loss that occurs after menopause or with use of corticosteroid medications. Fosemax also increases the amount of bone in most patients. Fosemax should not be taken in patients with certain disorders of the esophagus (the tube that connects your mouth with your stomach). It should also not be taken by patients that cannot stand or sit upright for at least 30 minutes. As well, Fosemax should not be taken in patients who have low levels of calcium in their blood or who have severe kidney disease.
