What is the new designation of train engine driver ?
The guy who drives the engine is the “engineer” while his partner on the cab is the “mecanician”. It comes from the steam locomotives era when mechanic was so complex that they needed engineers and mecanicians to operate them. The “conductor” was the guy who looked at the good runnning of the train, mostly doing administrative paperworks. He was mostly in the caboose at rear of freight trains or in passenger coaches and one of his job was to check and sell tickets. On freight trains, the “conductor” job has been completely eliminated when railroad companies reduced crewmembers to only two crewmembers in the cab and replaced cabooses with end-of-train automatic devices. On passenger trains the “conductor” title has also been eliminated but often replaced by someone with another title like “service manager”, ticket agent to do the same job.
