What is the new area for Artist Communities?
A new field designation has been created for Artist Communities in recognition of the unique role that they play as supporters of creativity and individual artists. Artist Communities now will be on par with other fields, such as Museums or Presenting, through which applicants approach the agency and its funding opportunities. All artist communities now will apply to the Access to Artistic Excellence category through Artist Communities. For the Arts Endowment’s purposes, an artist community is defined as an organization, whether focused on a single discipline or multidisciplinary, whose sole mission is to provide artist residencies. However, an organization that provides residencies in addition to other functions should apply through the discipline/field of its project (e.g., dance, literature, visual arts), and not Artist Communities.
