Depends on the particular “unconventional” process. Often, this term refers to EDM, electron discharge machining, of which there are several types. EDM can remove metal from a part very precisely without having to clamp a part down with great force, and can remove metal with little or no effect on the surrounding area. It is often used to remove broken fasteners or taps from expensive parts for that reason.
