A lot of answers here, but I feel I have to respectfully disagree with just about everyone due to some basic thoughts that appear to have been missed. Probation is granted by a Judge during the sentencing portion of a trial and can be granted for misdemeanors or felonies in place of going to jail or prison. Prisons ONLY deal with convicted felons. Once a person has been convicted of a felony, sent to prison and served a portion of their sentence, they MAY be eligible for parole. A felon cannot be granted probation from prison. Parole is granted through the Adult Parole Authority only.. I work for the state of Ohio, Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. The Adult Parole Authority is also under the same department. I have parole officers that work inside my prison on a daily basis and we work hand in hand in compiling reports on offenders. Our pay grades are the same, although PO’s get paid for the mileage of driving their own vehicles and we get a lot of overtime where PO’s do n
