What is the nature of Puerto Ricos relationship to the United States?
Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States after being ceded by Spain as spoils of war at the conclusion of the Spanish-American War of 1898. It is currently known as the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico in English, and “Estado Libre Asociado” (Free Associated State) in Spanish.
