What is the National Institute of Healths role in fighting health disparities?
The mission of the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NCMHD) is to promote minority health and to lead, coordinate, support, and assess the National Institutes of Health (NIH) effort to reduce and ultimately eliminate health disparities. In this effort, NCMHD will conduct and support basic, clinical, social, and behavioral research, promote research infrastructure and training, foster emerging programs, disseminate information, and reach out to minority and other communities affected by health disparities. The NIH is also seeking to improve the visibility of minority health disparities research and other health disparities research, as well as to expand the role of such research in learning why some groups have disproportionately high rates of disease. In addition to awarding grants and contracts independently, the center continues the legacy of the former NIH Office of Research on Minority Health in partnering with the NIH institutes and centers to support prog
