What is the National Gap Analysis Program ?
• Gap Analysis is a scientific method for identifying the degree to which native animal species and natural communities are or are not represented in our present-day conservation lands. Those species and communities not adequately represented in areas that are being managed for native species constitute “gaps” in the existing network of conservation lands. • The purpose of the Gap Analysis Program is to provide broad geographic information on the status of all terrestrial vertebrates and their habitats in order to proactively address the loss of biological diversity and prevent future conservation crises. • The Gap Analysis Program is sponsored primarily by the US Geological Survey, Biological Resources Division.. The US Geological Survey ensures scientific and technical validity and coordinates activities among the state projects. However, the state projects are only made possible through the cooperation of over 200 organizations. The Program is carried out state-by-state in partnersh
