The Audit Commission is responsible for ensuring that public money is spent economically, efficiently and effectively. In 1996 they set up the National Fraud Initiative (NFI) to collect electronic data from audited bodies and then match this data to prevent and detect fraud. To date an estimated £450 million of fraud and overpayments has been identified from this work and the initiative has attracted international recognition.
