What is the National Academy of Sciences and why is it involved with the Zoo?
The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) is a private, non-profit society of scholars engaged in scientific research. In 1863 President Lincoln created the NAS under Congressional charter to advise the federal government on scientific issues. As science has become more complex and even contentious over the years, the NAS is often asked by Congress to examine science and technology issues that affect public policy and life. In 2003, Congress asked the NAS to appoint a committee to “assess the quality and effectiveness of animal management, husbandry, and care” at the National Zoo. The NAS is expected to issue an interim report as part of their one-year review of the Zoo in December 2003. More information on this review can be found on the National Academy of Sciences Web site – www.nationalacademies.org.
