What is the name of the skull cap worn by Jewish men and boys?
It is called a yarmulke in Yiddish, or kippah in Hebrew. In Jewish tradition, Jewish males are expected to cover their heads when they pray. It is a sign of respect, and is said to remind them that God is present above us. The origin of the word ‘yarmulke’ is unclear. Some people say it is derived from the Hebrew phrase ‘Yare me-eloquim’ – in awe of God.
