It was sputnik from Russia. The actual date was October 4th 1957 and it seems they did it to mark the 40th anniversary of the Russian revoltuion which was in 1917. Sputnik was only the size of a basketball and weighed about 183 pounds and took 98 minutes to orbit the earth. They launched sputnik II on November 3rd because sputnik I was so successful. On January 31st 1958 the USA launched their first satellite Explorer I.
