What is the myth/story/truth behind the Siberian Hell recordings?
My best guesses – and I’m no expert – would be either electromagnetic interference from the highly ionised rock and magma down there, or some kind of turbulent air current under massive heat and pressure conditions. Back then, they didn’t know about that sort of thing and the noises do sound a lot like screeching and screaming. If you’re in an isolated place and come from a time when scientific knowledge is limited and religious/ mythological stories have heavy influenc on your upbringing, then demons and Hell make up a significant proportion of your pschological and intellectual frame of reference. For me, it sounds most like electromagnetic interference, with some similarities to sonic recordings of marine mammals. That’s probably because I’m an atheist with a lifelong interest in that kind of thing. I dare say that the equipment now exists to probe the area in more detail, but they’ve already figured out where the oil is, so nobody wants to fund that sort of project. I’m not claimin
