Monsters vs Aliens is a smash hit for DreamWorks, and you can see why. It has both monsters and aliens in the title, and gets them to pound each other to pieces. It resembles that holy grail of family entertainment, a film by rival animation studio Pixar – think Monsters, Inc meets The Incredibles. Plus, it looks funny, and has an exciting set piece on the Golden Gate Bridge. The opening weekend is duly enormous, the kids are diverted for 90-odd minutes, and Happy Meals fly off the shelves. Who’s complaining? Well, someone has to. There’s something about the DreamWorks style that’s hard to warm to. Huge swathes of their output – Shark Tale, Madagascar, even last year’s megahit Kung Fu Panda – strike me as smarmy, clever-clever, faintly cynical. By definition, any mass-market animated feature is going to be made by committee, but with these you can almost smell the lattes and sweat in the boardroom.
