What is the Mount Pilchuck Honors Choir?
Our state music organization (Washington Music Educators Association) is divided up into 22 regional organizations. We belong to the Mount Pilchuck Association, which includes 120 music educators in east Snohomish County. We run a number of secondary music festivals every year. The one elementary festival we run is the Honors Choir, in May. Last year, only 10 students from each school could attend, because there about 20 schools involved. The students learn difficult music, with the help of CD’s and mandatory lunch practices, usually, and then go to a 4-hour Saturday rehearsal, as well as get out of school for an all-day rehearsal on Monday. The concert is in the evening, and is an exciting event with 700 in attendance to hear the 200 students. The challenge is that we always have more students who qualify than we can send. I’m sure it will be difficult to pick students this year, as well. I only try out choir students, since they are already getting the vocal training that is expected
