What is the most vexing question in modern science?
One of my personal favorites is quantum nonlocality — the fact that a subatomic system, if expanded to macroscopic dimensions, behaves in some respects as if it had never heard of space and time. Some argue that this doesn’t much matter, as a question of hard science, and I can see their point. But I suspect that this issue is pregnant with the potential for new understanding. Another is the riddle posed by dark matter and “dark energy” in the universe. I’m writing a piece for The New Yorker on that one, so stay tuned…
