Answer [Pilar O’Leary]: I believe that all cultures are equally as important in the United States, part of what makes our country so strong is indeed its cultural diversity. Latinos have a long history in the United States — indeed, decades before English colonists arrived on these shores, Hispanic explorers founded the first European settlement in St. Augustine, Florida. The influence of Latinos, especially as the population grows in size, is felt in every aspect of our society — economics, politics, culture, you name it. Part of what we try to do at the Smithsonian Latino Center is to ensure that these contributions are highlighted to the general public.
