What is the most important skill for a new player wheelchair basketball player to work on and why?
“This is a tough question as really the sport attracts new players for so many different reasons: Rehabilitation, able-bodies who fall into the sport of have friends in the sport who are able or have a disability, past stand-up basketball experienced players, etc. I do believe though and I tell most players who start to play the game that give it 3-5 years just to learn the mechanics of the chair to really learn the techniques of the game. Dribbling, Passing, Shooting, Offence and Defence all come off of the ability to properly work the wheelchair. There are a number of great players out there who have unbelievable chair skills: Pat Anderson, Danielle Peers and past great players of the likes of Pat Griffin. All of these players and so many more National Team players in our Men’s and Women’s program today have really good chair skills. This particular skill is developed through a lot of hard work with dedicated practice time each time you go on the floor. A player must be able to sit p
