What is the most famous case of Police Corruption in Australia ?
Most likely that of Detective Sergeant Roger Caleb Rogerson. Rogerson was a detective in the NSW Police Force in the 70s-80s. He was one of their most decorated officers, and recieved 13 citations for bravery, including the Peter Mitchell Award (the highest award the NSW Police have). He was also one of the most corrupt policeman the world has ever seen. Rogerson was known to work with criminals who would pay him for their protection. He gave some criminals a “green light”, which meant that they could carry out any crimes they wanted without any police interference (except attackng a police officer). One criminal he gave this to was Arthur “Neddy” Smith, who went on to become one of the most powerful criminals in Australia under his protection. Roger also shot and killed Warran Lanfranchi, another Sydney-based criminal.
