What is the modern definition of geography?
The definition of geography comes from it’s root words: geo=earth and graphy=writing (broad version to include anything recorded including charts, art, maps, graphs, math problems, etc.) Geography is the study of any and all processes, relationships, and/or phenomenon that occur on the surface of earth. Most modern definitions include a qualifier that geography is specifically concerned about these processes, relationships, and phenomenon as they relate to or affect humans and include a spatial element. The spatial element qualifier is non-consequential, since there is no phenomenon that cannot be linked to a spatial element, even if the element is so vast as to include “everywhere on earth”. Other definitions will specify geography as a multidisciplinary and holistic philosophical framework that stresses spatial thinking about global or local problems.
