The unemployment rate fell to 8.1 percent in April from 8.2 percent in March. Minnesota employers cut 9,500 jobs during the month, about half the number of jobs lost in March, according to new seasonally adjusted figures from the Department of Employment and Economic Development. The state has a lower unemployment rate than the nation’s 8.9 percent rate in April. Commissioner Dan McElroy said the slowdown in job losses is encouraging but the economy is still challenged. He said he has yet to see one sign of recovery he’s watching for: Fresh hiring at temporary help agencies acting as the recession’s shock absorber. “We are not interpreting this as a turning point in the recession.
