The number of endogenous controls needed for proper normalization is different from experiment to experiment. It is recommended to start with as many endogenous control as possible, test their expression in all sample types and then analyze the results using software programs such as geNORM, normFinder or BestKeeper to select the most stably expressed control or set of controls to use for that particular experiment. Please refer to questions 22 and 26 for further details on selecting and validating endogenous controls for normalization. For more information on endogenous controls and for a reference list, please see this tech note.
