What is the Michigan School Breakfast Challenge? How do schools receive additional recognition program points for the Breakfast Challenge?
State superintendent Mike Flanagan challenged all Michigan superintendents to increase school breakfast participation in their districts by 50% (See www.michigan.gov/schoolnutrition and click on School Breakfast Program). While more than 80% of Michigan schools offer breakfast, participation remains low. Research shows that children who eat breakfast perform better academically, have fewer behavioral problems, and improve diet quality. Schools that increase their school breakfast participation between May 2008 and May 2009 will receive points depending on the percent of increase, with higher percentage increases receiving more points. In addition, schools receive points for breakfast participation rates that are close to lunch participation rates. The closer participation rates are the greater the number of points received.
