What is the medical term for the condition caused by flesh eating bacteria?
Flesh eating bacteria are real, and risky, especially during summer months. The medical term for the condition caused by flesh eating bacteria is necrotizing fasciitis. This month a North Carolina teenager nearly perished from an infection possibly acquired at Hope Mills Lake in North Carolina, thought to be caused by the bacteria Chromobacterium Violaceum, very common bacteria found in lakes. The bacteria lead to surgical removal of the teen’s nose, teeth and roof of his mouth. The most common bacteria that destroy flesh come from group A strep (GAS), the same bacteria that cause sore throat. Bacterial infections from group A streptococcus cause healthy tissue to die, leading to the term flesh eating bacteria. Sources: http://www.examiner.
