What is the meaning of Upanishad?
Upan means near, ni means down, shat means sit. Sit down near. So, Upanishad means students should sit down near the teacher. This may not be possible for western students. Why should I sit down? I want to sit on the head of the teacher! (Laughter) Why? Equal rights! But, the idea behind sit down near is this: The teacher sits at a higher level and the students sit at a lower level. Knowledge flows downward just as water flows downward. Upanishad means sit-down-near. Upanishad is taking place every day in the presence of Swami.
