What is the meaning of Tori Amos lyrics in “Horses”?
There is no one meaning to Horses, just as with the rest of the songs on Pele. A lot of the meaning probably is more personal to Tori, for example I have no idea who bill and ben are, but maybe they’re people Tori met and only she can understand the reference (there is a ‘billy’ at the beginning of her song mother). So no one would be able to interpret the song line for line except Tori, so you can pretty much insert whatever it means to you. But the basic premise of the song is that the Horses from the song “Winter” are back to take her on a journey to discover her dark side and her demons. It’s important to note that for Tori, dark side does not mean evil, but the side of herself that she’s kept hidden. Thematically, she wrote the song as a transition into the more harsh blood roses, where she starts realizing that she’s allowing herself to be treated like a piece of meat.
