The poem, “Evening on the Lawn” is about a moment in a yong man’s life when he realizes that he has to grow up. He begins to understand that he is not out in the world making his dreams come true. Life is passing him by because others are out burning up the sky. “Burning up the sky”, means they are out in the world making things happen. When he says that his stomach is a valley he means that he has not experienced anything in life that has been meaningful enough to fill his belly with hope and excitement. The new rope means that he has not broken the binds in his life to become his own man. And the youthful black hair has not begun to get any gray in it because he is still so young.
