Lemuria was originally the name given to a vast hypothetical sunken continent or a landbridge stretching across the Indian Ocean and Indonesia, all the way to the central Pacific Ocean. But this notion has long ago been superseded in modern geology. Hence, the name of Lemuria can be interpreted as “Land Ancestral” or “Land of the Ancestors”. Alternatively, the name can be derive from that of Mu or Mu-devi, the Hindu Mother Goddess. Mu means “Mother” in Dravida, and Mu-devi means “Mother Goddess”.
