Riba al-Fadl refers to that type of riba which pertains to trade contracts. It refers to exchange of different quantities (but different qualities) of the same commodity. Such exchange in particular commodities defined in Shariah is not allowed. Different schools of fiqh apply this prohibition to different commodities.
