What is the Meaning of Referendum?
What is more important in the Swiss case is the referendum, not the results. Isn’t it a problematic issue on its own that a referendum was made on a religious issue? When the historical background and abovementioned demographical data are taken into consideration, this referendum is not compatible with the tradition, culture and the sui-generis structure of Switzerland. It seems that the “Swiss Harmony” has started to be distorted. The ban of the minaret, which includes both the religious and cultural motifs of a Muslim society that cannot be underestimated, has no meaning except this. In this regard, it is not wrong to say that if it is ventured to such meaningful referendum, the political structure of the country is not hesitating to clash with the value system of Europe in general and Switzerland in particular.
