What is the meaning behind the wolf with Cloud Strife?
If it was a wolf with red fur, then it is called Red Thirteen, and is an intelligent wolf like creature that can talk and reason. The emblem “XIII” was a tattoo placed on it by the Shinra scientist Hojo, after he captured it for genetic experiments. The designation of “thirteen” implies that Hojo had twelve others, but Red 13 does not mention them, only that he is the last of his kind. Cloud encounters it during the events of FF7, frees it, and it joins the party. During a flashback later in the game you see how Red 13’s parents died, fighting undead spirits in Cosmo Canyon. It is apparently the last of its kind, according to the game, but at the end of FF7, after the credits roll, you see a scene from 500 years in the future. Midgar is abandoned and totally overgrown, and Red 13 and his? children are looking down at the ruined city. So either there was a female of his species hiding somewhere, or he can reproduce asexually, although that is not a high option given that he had parents
