What is the MDG reporting mechanism and WHO’s role?
WHO is working closely with other organizations of the United Nations system to report on the development goals. WHO shares lead agency responsibility with UNICEF for reporting on child mortality, maternal health, childhood nutritional status, malaria prevention measures and access to clean water. WHO, UNAIDS and UNICEF collaborate in the achievement of HIV-prevention targets. The World Bank, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the United Nations Population Division are using WHO, United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund and UNAIDS data bases as their main sources of MDG health information. The UN Working Group on Indicators, part of the United Nations Development Group (UNDG), proposed the indicators and established a reporting system for monitoring the MDGs.
