According to the Mayan Prophecy of 2012, some kind of universal catastrophe will occur on December 21, 2012 which will bring about the end of the earth. The prophecy is based on the ancient Mayans’ work in charting the patterns of the stars as they moved across the sky. The Mayans were brilliant mathematicians and astronomers, while at the same time believing that the sun was a god and that the Milky Way was the pathway between life and the afterlife. It is possible that the ancient Mayans explained the significance of the conjuncture between Galaxy and Sun on the day of winter solstice in 2012 in terms of their mythology. Thus, a previous conjuncture some 5 thousand years before was thought of as the day of creation.
