What is the maximum weight of caravan I am entitled to tow?

0

If you passed your driving test before 1 January 1997, you are entitled to tow any outfit where the combined maximum authorised mass (MAM) does not exceed 8,250kg. If you passed your test since the 1 January 1997 then you are restricted to the entitlement of licence category B, which restricts you to driving a vehicle with a MAM of up to 3,500kg and towing a trailer of 750kg or a heavier trailer or caravan as long as the combined MAM of vehicle and caravan/trailer does not exceed 3,500kg and the MAM of the caravan/trailer does not exceed the unladen weight of the tow vehicle. You can upgrade your category B entitlement by taking a further test to obtain category B+E, which will enable you to tow larger caravans with any vehicle having a MAM not exceeding 3,500kg. Details of the test are indicated in the Driving Standards Agency publication, The Official Guide to Learning to Drive.
