What is the maximum tuning resolution of TBX1?
The maximum resolution depends on the synthesizer. TBX1 sends 14-bit pitch bend resolution at 1 halfstep bend range which is 98304 steps per octave, or about 0.01 cents tuning accuracy, which is about 0.005 cents greatest tuning error for any desired pitch. If a given synth does not support 14-bit bending, the tuning will still be as close as possible, as such devices will truncate the ‘fine tuning’ part of the tuning message. For this reason, TBX1 has a toggle switch to send 7-bit messages with rounding instead of truncation, resulting in truer mapping of the original 98304 steps per octave down to 768 steps per octave, giving 1.56 cents tuning accuracy, which is about 0.8 cents greatest tuning error for any desired pitch. All tuning tables are stored in 14-bit precision for 98304 pitches per octave accuracy. The bend range may optionally be adjusted using the Tuning Box Editor software, resulting in other possible tuning resolutions.
